Self-Portraits
Test Shot in preparation for Final Show ...

As many of you may be aware, I returned to University after completing my HND in Design Photography 18 years ago. During the years I had a strong desire to go back to complete my BA Hons in Photography. On many occasions I have been asked why? I can not really answer why, I just felt that I have always wanted to, (a tick off my bucket list as to speak). The year is nearly at an end and I have chosen to take on a series of self-portrait images to go on display in the final show. These are test shots and not the actual images for the exhibition, I thought I would have a play and see what they would look like on the cover of a magazine, just for fun.

I have styled these images myself, the Make-up, Hair and outfits. I am also the photographer and the subject. It has been a challenge because I am not a model by any means and I have always been more comfortable behind the lens . In all my years as a photographer I have never set upon photographing myself in this way, so it has been a personnel process and one I am glad I took on. I have taken my influence from one of the most influential photographers of her time Cindy Sherman and now I can put myself in her shoes and I began to understand why she completed work as she did. She created her self-portrait by making herself ugly and taking her reference from what she saw around her and in magazines, her images depict different characters whilst still being her underneath at the styling. I wanted to do the opposite of the ugly and create a dark beauty type of look to my own work. I am therefore putting myself up for creative criticism and opening up my thoughts, Scarey I know.

Saying all that and working through the fact that I am now looking at myself in a different context, like finding it hard to believe it is actually me. I have to say I am really pleased with how they have developed, the actual whole process has provided me a personnel challenge and I now can put myself in your shoes and understand how you feel in front of the camera. I begin to look at this series of images in a new light and I am proud to say that I have completed my goal, I will be sharing the series soon, once they have been on display at the Exhibition.
