Movie Time
Stills Photographer visit
A few weeks ago at Carmarthen School of Art, Coleg Sir Gar, I was fortunate to meet an fellow ex student who now works in the movie industry as a still photographer. His name is Giles Keyte. Giles started his presentation to all students in the photography department with an images that he shot. Whilst studying his HND in Photography, he won an award for a competition run by Levi Jeans. Giles then spoke about how he got into the film industry and worked his way up from the bottom.
During the slide show presentation, Giles showed us images from a selection of movies that he has worked on including Star Wars - The Phantom Menace, Fast & Furious, Fury staring Brad Pitt and the recent about to be released on Dvd, The Martian staring Matt Damon. Although he has worked with a lot of actors and actresses, he told us that sometimes it's far from glamorous. During shooting Fury, he showed the students images where he was covered in mud, shooting on cold damp days. His kit was subjected to the elements and at one point one of his still cameras actually found the floor, not great when you have expensive equipment.
A very interesting insight into the world of still photography, from the transition of film to digital and the way he works. Along with all the pressure and deadlines in the film industry, I could see he loves his job and very good at it too.
