Bevvypix recreates Cindy Sherman with Lego
As many of you already know, I began to photograph myself in the form of lego as another way to explore self-portraiture and record daily life. The lego is a way of expressing how I am feeling and one image I captured looked almost like a Cindy Sherman image, this was the start of this series. I suddenly thought what if I could use some of her influential photographs to recreate lego pix photographs for my ever growing Instagram page @bevvypix https://www.instagram.com/bevvypix/?hl=en and put my lego selfie into similar type images within my own daily life.
Probably one of the most well known
female photographers who contemplates boundaries and breaks the rules is Cindy
Sherman. Her images are based on the theory that is
perceived as stereotypical within our culture.
She captivates us into what she asks us to contemplate our own
thoughts. Sherman invites us into her
performance of her work, which is representational and she addresses identity
issues that perhaps some would argue that she holds a dark reality.
She calls attention by the way she structures her photographs by using herself, which offers the viewer the opportunity to understand why Cindy Sherman perception of visible reality was documented in this way. She is both subject and object in relation to her images, what is interesting is that there is no self in her portraits because she plays a role and we are merely spectators … Her choice of lens by focal length and working f/stop alters the relationship between herself in the frame and create the fantasy. What we begin to experience is the reality, which has controlled the fantasy. The fantasy protects us from being consumed by the real and reality itself can activate an escape from the real.
The importance of seeing yourself ‘visually reflected’ will explain why people choose to like Sherman’s work and Actors in movies, can they relate to a character in her images or on the cinema screen as it reminds the viewer that they are like us, we can identify and reinforce our sense of self.
Undoubtedly Sherman is a contemporary master of socially critical photography. Her work is either loved or disliked, her ability to take herself and transform into someone else, you will agree is pretty genius. I for one admire her artistic approach and her photographic vision. I would hope that if she ever came across my work she would feel that I portrayed her well in plastic.
So for those who understand and for those who are a little confused as to why I have been posting images of lego recently, this might explain a few references. To put lego me bevvypix into various scenarios has been a challenging and fun series to personally create. Many if not all my images have been taken using an iPhone, they have been edited using the iPhone and uploaded using the iPhone. For me, they are visual reminders of a great artists work.
