Behind the Scenes of Drone Photography | Aerial Perspective with Beverley Thomas Photography
Behind the Scenes of My Drone Photography Journey
Welcome to this edition of The Bevvypix Diaries. This time, we're taking to the skies to explore the fascinating world of drone photography in Wales. Join me in planning, preparation and creativity as they come together to capture the world from above.
Have you ever wondered what really goes into creating an aerial photograph?
For many people, drone photography looks effortless. A drone lifts into the sky, captures a beautiful landscape and lands a few minutes later. The reality is quite different.
Every photograph begins long before the drone leaves the ground. Planning, preparation, safety, creativity and careful editing all play an important role in creating images that not only look beautiful but also tell a story.
As a professional photographer and CAA qualified drone pilot, I thought I’d take you behind the scenes and share what a typical drone photography journey looks like through the eyes of Beverley Thomas Photography.
⸻
1. My Licence
Every professional flight begins with responsibility.
Holding an A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) and being a CAA Registered Drone Operator means I fly legally, safely and responsibly wherever I go.
Understanding the regulations, respecting airspace and considering the safety of people, wildlife and property are just as important as creating beautiful photographs.
Every flight starts with professionalism.
⸻
2. Planning the Adventure
The best photographs rarely happen by chance.
Before leaving home, I spend time researching locations, checking weather forecasts, monitoring wind speeds, sunrise and sunset times, tide tables where appropriate and any local flight restrictions.
Good planning means I arrive in the right place at exactly the right time.
⸻
3. Packing My Kit
Preparation is everything.
Before every flight I check that everything is ready:
- Drone
- Controller
- Fully charged batteries
- Memory cards
- Propellers
- Filters
- Cables and accessories
A simple checklist helps ensure nothing is forgotten, allowing me to focus entirely on photography once I’m on location.
⸻
4. Arriving on Location
Every landscape deserves respect.
Before flying, I take time to explore the area, assess potential hazards and identify the safest take-off point.
I also spend a few quiet moments simply enjoying the surroundings because understanding the landscape often inspires the photographs that follow.
⸻

5. Ready for Take-off
With all safety checks complete, it’s finally time.
After checking satellite connection, battery levels, controller settings and weather conditions one final time, the drone gently lifts into the air.
That moment never loses its excitement.
⸻
6. Flying with Purpose
Flying isn’t simply about getting the drone higher.
Every movement has intention.
I’m constantly thinking about light, composition, leading lines, balance and how best to tell the story of the landscape beneath me.
The drone becomes another camera in my creative toolkit.
⸻
7. Capturing the View
This is where preparation meets creativity.
Whether it’s dramatic coastlines, peaceful lakes, rolling countryside or hidden valleys, I’m always searching for that perspective that most people never get to experience.
Every location has a story waiting to be discovered from above.
⸻
8. Reviewing the Flight
Before packing away, I review every image while I’m still on location.
Checking focus, exposure, composition and overall quality allows me to make adjustments if needed while the light and conditions are still perfect.
It’s a habit that has saved many missed opportunities over the years.
⸻

9. Landing and Packing Away
Every flight should end as responsibly as it began.
Once I’ve captured everything I need, I land safely, power down the equipment and carefully pack everything away.
Leaving no trace behind is part of respecting the beautiful places I photograph.
⸻
10. Editing the Story
Back at my computer, the creative process continues.
Editing isn’t about changing reality—it’s about bringing the image to life in a way that reflects what I experienced when I stood there.
Colour, contrast, light and atmosphere are carefully refined to create photographs that remain true to the landscape while showcasing its natural beauty.
⸻

11. Sharing the Journey
Photography is meant to be shared.
Whether it’s here on my website, through my blog or across social media, I enjoy sharing not only the finished photographs but also the stories behind them.
Hopefully, they inspire others to see familiar places from a completely different perspective.
⸻
More Than Just Flying
Drone photography is about far more than operating an aircraft.
It’s about planning.
It’s about patience.
It’s about creativity.
It’s about responsibility.
Most importantly, it’s about seeing the world differently.
Every flight has a purpose.
Every image tells a story.
"And for me, that’s what Aerial Perspective with Beverley Thomas Photography is all about."
⸻

Every landscape has a story… I just happen to tell mine from above. ❤️🚁
